Anonymous: Please don't rub it in, whining about it just makes people hate the program. Some of us would like to keep our reputation up so that drama isn't cut next year - because it's very close to being gone. Besides, the $1000 is most likely going to scholarships so that more students can participate in what they love. You hate denying that to drama kids, why would you selfishly deny it to basketball kids?

First off! I don’t make all of these, so please don’t get upset at me for something posted on here.

In regards to my personal view regarding the whole subject? I feel like this relates back to the entire “Athletics vs. Arts Varsity Lettering” issue. I think that there are a ton of groups at Westview that dedicate their time and effort to something they’re passionate about, whether it’s Basketball, Drama, Track and Field, Nexus, Yearbook, Choir, Band, Football, Dance, Cheer, ROTC, Cyber Security, Academic League, etc. etc. etc. I believe that they should be recognized for their hard work and dedication. Life isn’t all about athletics, and there are plenty of other ways people contribute to the “spirit of Westview” or whatever, and they deserve the chance to letter and earn 1000 dollars for that group.
Budget cuts are tough and affecting every aspect of Westview, but an opportunity to earn valuable funds should not be limited strictly to Athletics. That award could be split into 500 dollars for an Athletics team and 500 for a non-athletic group (just as some people would prefer an “arts” and “athletics” letter) to allow everyone a shot, while still pleasing the “ra ra sports teams!” people that exist at our school.
In my opinion, there’s tons of fantastic teams and groups at Westview. They all take time, effort, dedication, passion, and commitment. This idea and stigma that strictly athletics deserves recognition and respect is disappointing and unfair at a campus as diverse as Westview.
